The cracker, sometimes known as a popper, is the thin attachment on the very end of your whip. It is called this because it is the part of the whip that allows it to crack.
Every time you crack your whip, the cracker is creating a miniature sonic boom, creating enormous stress on the thinnest part of the whip. Over time, the cracker will break and need to be replaced.
The good news is that crackers are affordable and easy to replace. Western Stage Props carries crackers in several colors, available for purchase here. And if you're feeling adventurous, you can even make your own.
