.380 — The Stage Blank
When it comes to blank ammunition, there are countless calibers to choose from—but if you’re new to the world of stage effects or simply want a reliable go-to, the .380 stage blank is the unsung star of the show. Versatile, dependable, and performer-friendly, it’s the workhorse blank used in most replica revolvers—and a favorite for theatrical productions.
We strongly encourage the use of revolvers on stage. Why? Because they deliver consistency, customizable noise levels, and a level of user-friendliness that helps actors who may be nervous or inexperienced feel grounded and safe.
Blank-firing replica revolvers (prop weapons designed to make a dramatic sound without firing a projectile) have shortened chambers made specifically for the .380 blank. The .380—also known as 9mm RK—is essentially a short .38-caliber cartridge: same diameter, shorter length, less powder. Even if someone tried to load a live .38-caliber bullet into one of these replicas, it simply wouldn’t fit. That’s the entire point.
Using .380 blanks in replica revolvers creates an essential safety barrier during stage combat or dramatic scenes. It allows performers to act boldly, without fear of an accidental real round being chambered.
And the best part? The .380 offers a spectacular range of load (noise) options to suit any mood, venue, or dramatic moment.
Types of .380s
Factory Full Load
Our standard .380 cartridge, produced by major manufacturers, delivers a crisp, loud report perfect for track-and-field starts, dog training, and rehearsal use.
Properties: Loud, minimal smoke, cost-effective
If you want something with more drama, look no further—our custom loads deliver the full theatrical experience.
Full Load with Smoke
This round uses a corrosive powder that creates not only a powerful bang but also a rolling plume of smoke—evoking the look and feel of authentic gunfire. Ideal for outdoor reenactments, cowboy shootouts, or any moment where theatrical realism matters. These are stunning for that one pivotal gunshot that changes everything in a scene. Note: smoky rounds burn dirtier and require extra cleaning.
Properties: Loud, smoky, strikingly realistic
Half Load
Our most popular stage option.
With half the powder, these blanks offer half the volume but still pack enough punch to feel dramatic. They produce a touch of smoke—just enough to read without overwhelming the space. Perfect for 50–100-seat theaters or productions with plenty of repeated gunfire.
Properties: Loud but comfortable, lightly smoky, reliable for repeated cues
Quarter Load
Even softer in volume, these are perfect for intimate black box venues and indoor productions where subtlety is key.
Properties: Moderate noise, minimal smoke
Primer Only
Containing only a live primer cap housed in an empty cartridge with no powder, these rounds produce a sharp, attention-grabbing pop—more dramatic than a toy cap, but gentle enough for close-range cues.
These cartridges are perfect for easing performers or animals into the world of gunfire, letting them adjust through a steady progression of sound that prepares them for a full-volume shot.
Properties: Quietest option, no smoke
